Don't Wait Til It's Cool: A North Carolina Hip Hop Photo Exhibition

Fifteen photographers  featured in a travel exhibition -  "Don't Wait Til It's Cool", explores the relationship between North Carolina's hip-hop culture, music venues, and the various photographers that capture those artists on stage and beyond. This exhibition features photographic works from artists that have supported North Carolina’s Hip Hop Community through their lenses. We hope to invoke discussion about the role of photography in a music artist's development, arts placemaking, and hip-hop's representation in the public arts sector.

JCSU SNEAKER LECTURE | REEBOK SNEAKER GIVE-A-WAY

Since 2014 I have had the the pleasure of being a guest lecturer at Johnson C. Smith University. JCSU is home to the world's first for credit english course dedicated to identification within sneaker culture. In my guest lecture we talk about life skills, the in's and out's of the sneaker industry, and encourage student to create opportunities through their passions. This year I was blessed enough to partner with Social Status and give-a-way their recent collab with Reebok to all students in attendance.

Welcome to Brookhill Exhibition | the Harvey B. Gantt Center AfrAm Arts + Culture (Fall’18 - Spring 2020)

Welcome to Brookhill may not reveal the story one expects when they hear the words gentrification and displacement. The uninitiated consider the land and the now crumbling buildings. Photographer Alvin C. Jacobs, Jr. focuses on the people. Men are raising daughters, grandchildren splash in shallow pools, and neighbors gather on porches. Developers, anxiously eyeing this plot of land across a busy street, must wait, leaving families hanging in the balance.

The land where Brookhill Village stands has been an African-American community since the 1930s. One company owns the property that makes up this 36-acre community just south of Uptown Charlotte, another firm owns the wooden, single-story buildings that were developed in 1951. This arrangement has become a quagmire for the owners and, subsequently, for the residents.

#CHARLOTTEGOTTASHINE | SOCIAL STATUS X JORDAN BRAND ALL STAR WEEKEND COMMUNITY INITIATIVE

In the wake of the 2017 NBA All-Star Game being up rooted from Charlotte due to the controversial HB2 law, Social Status teamed up with Jordan brand to add some positive light back to the region. I was tasked with coordinating a community initiative that highlighted individuals and organizations helping Charlotte shine. We had 10 recipients they were honored with a plaque, a pair of Jordan Motorsport 4's, and an opportunity to speak for their positive impact to the community.
